No doubt - there's a lot of baggage that comes along with pulling the trigger. Financial, emotional, personal - the whole works. That is still the case. That's part of the reason that in many places, you have to really believe that you are going to die if you don't pull the trigger. I would probably choose the other hassles over dying.

A radio talk show, on guns, we heard while off camping in NM, AZ.. Don't recall the host or show names, but the gist of it it was, it was a Gun Talk show, very pro guns.. But he warned, if ever that gun is used, even protecting your home, it changes the whole friend, family dynamic.. Family and friends no longer trust you. Wives will divorce you. It will cost you at least $40k (at the time) to get clear of legal tangles.. So before you ever pull that trigger, plan on an extreme change to your life... It is not a simple Bang, it's over.. Only in the gun owner's dreams..

I heard the above, maybe 20 years ago.. Made sense then, makes sense today.. Guns are great works of art, great to collect, admire the technology, a kick to fire at ranges, but, other than hunting or traps, are they really worth it?
