D&O, you are sounding like a fiscal conservative (hey who isn't) but the world has not been kind to fiscal conservatives, but darn it, Clinton did a tax hike, welfare reform, and pay-as-you-go. W lit fire to the joint.

Some despise govt so much, that I believe their purpose is to break it beyond repair, then throw their hands up and say ... looks like we need to get rid of it, its broken.

Social safety nets are cheaper than jails and civil war. Giving punk bums a free lunch is wrong, but it beats the alternative ... within reason. All groups of humans have their doers and their deadbeats. No amount of COMMIE mongering is going to change that. So, you jail them for 60-80k a year, give them a free lunch for 20-30 a year, or try to starve them until the go ape steal your stuff and burn the house down.

Extreme generalizations, the point being sometimes sensible is more sensible than right and wrong.

Hi Dig!

Can't much disagree with what you said.

The ME generation, of which I am an ill-fitting member, definitely has a lot, a LOT of blame.

One of 'em - GWB - is possibly my most despised politician of all times. Although many Dems are and have been distinctly worse, at least I knew what to expect. "The enemy". GWB, on the other hand, I consider a complete betrayal. The "friend" that betrays can be worse than the enemy you know in many ways.

And now, the GOP in general, I now despise as much as I do the Dems. But that's a whole 'nuther story.

I am not much of an optimist. I'm not sure we can fix the mess sufficiently. We've let it go SO far it might not be fixable.

Grouchy D&O

PS - been about four decades since I last walked out of that beef packing plant. But it was, no doubt, one of those valuable life experiences.
