And I hope the woman goes to jail, and loses her firearms rights, and even her child. She is an irresponsible buffoon, and cannot be trusted with a firearm. Sorry, not a lot of sympathy from me for her.

Guns are a serious responsibility, and parents need to live up to it, if they intend to have guns in the house. Guns should be secured when not in use. Children should be aware of the guns, and instructed as to their use (not necessarily to use them, but at least enough to understand that they are real). How much instruction is given is based on the age and maturity level of the child.

It's a good thing this victim's 15-year-old son knew how to handle the rifle to defend his father:

Morris News Service - Columbia County authorities have arrested three suspected accomplices of Justin Anthony Stephens, who was shot and killed while attempting to burglarize an apartment.

SEATTLE (AP) — Saying that she left firearms unsecured around her house, authorities issued an arrest warrant Monday for the mother of the 9-year-old Washington boy who is accused of bringing to school a gun that accidentally fired — seriously wounding a third-grade classmate.
