KTC> Make-believe portfolios are no good.

KillTheCat,
I am sure of one thing - and that is that I am
explaining things badly.

I started actually investing back in 1997 - when
I purchased Dominion Resources and I am fortunate
that it 'was a winner'. Oh, not a winner in that
it made me rich . . but a winner in the since that
it has steadily rewarded me for owning it over the
years. I have a sizeable un-realized capital gain
in it, and it just keeps putting money back into
my pocket.

I've made mistakes over the years. And I've had
several successes and a few spectacular failures.

I've read a LOT and determined (mostly through the
school of hard knocks) what works (for me) and what
doesn't.

I learned the value of reading and, more importantly,
understanding, the income statement and balance sheet.
The hard way.

If you only have a few stocks in the portfolio . . .
and one of them goes belly up . . .
You are screwed.

But if you have the bulk of your money in ten solid,
upstanding BIG blue chip type companies . . . and
smaller holdings in another five companies . . and
two of the small five go down like the Titanic it
isn't that bad. (Trust me, I went through that.
Decomposed sent me condolences on my losses of TMA
and AHM . . . . But them being bit players in my
portfolio it wasn't that bad.)

As for backtesting . . . if you want to try to
determine how a particular selection of stocks
would have fared in real life . . . that is another
tool to help.

Backtesting is a process that allows you to, in effect, go back in time, build a stock portfolio based on your selection strategy, and then see how your portfolio would have fared had you actually bought the stocks back then. StockScreen123, a brand new site, offers backtesting for free.

Instead of coming off like an idiot every time you
open your mouth . . you might try looking up a thing
and trying to see why someone suggests it.

Zim:

Make-believe portfolios are no good. It's like making mind bets on the horses. They always win.

I'd like to put her real portfolio online so as to get a real critique. her privacy would still be guarded.
