Actually, IBM labs ran the gamut as far as patents, Bell Labs as well... But there they seemed to stop, didn't have the ability or will, to bring those patents to the marketplace...

Bell turned their's over to Western Electric, folded many into various iterations of all sorts of end products in the telecom world, also failed, like IBM, to hit the consumer markets, other than tele handsets..

Today we've no idea what has become of the Bell patent libraries, after the transistor giveaway, maybe they should have just opened the whole library to the public, sold it off, something... Hate to think it's lost...

Weco: Nothing to it.

Suits were easy. You just went to Rafolowski's and got five suits, 12 buttondown white shirts, ten neckties, two dozen calf-length socks, underwear and undershirts, brown and black dress shoes, a black topcoat, gloves and a soft hat, all on credit if you were a new IBMer. They even found you a place to live while you got settled in. You had to find your own women.
