Folks aren't supposed to think about this for themselves - because, if they did, they might just come to the [correct] realization that it isn't actually possible to measure the system-wide price increase rate. To do so, the prices of EVERYTHING and their relative weights in our economy would have to be known and tracked.
They aren't.
It sure sounds good, though, for some government bureaucrat (who, as likely as not, is knowingly or unknowingly pushing a political agenda) to say that according to the CPI, prices are only increasing at 1.2 percent annually. Doesn't it???
And we stupidly believe that.
