Well, KTC,
Short answer is to have a market place where companies
can be bought and sold. Or, pieces of companies
(shares of stock) can be bought and sold.
This enables companies to raise capital for expansion
(through IPO's). And, it enables company owners to
'sell out' and receive a return on their investments.
The long answer is because government can NOT be
trusted to handle those functions.
