It's idiotic. No business should, through government action, be required to perform morally repugnant acts in the name of 'employee benefits.' Doing so creates a crisis of conscience.
Now, playing Devil's advocate for a moment, I have read that Jehovah's Witnesses are required to include TRANSFUSIONS in the health insurnace they provide for their employees. According to my source, Jehovah's Witnesses believe transfusions... like abortions... are sins.
I don't know if that's just a debate point, or if Jehovah's Witnesses actually feel that way. I'm not sure that they really care what NON Witnesses do, or if they actually consider it unethical to provide such insurance. My point is just that a precedent for forcing an employer to provide something it believes violates its religious views DOES exist.
And if it does, I think the law should be changed - in the Jehovah's Witnesses favor.
NO EMPLOYER should be required to violate its conscience with regard to employee benefits. Employees who aren't getting the benefits they want can always look for another employer or buy the benefits themselves with the superior salaries they will, presumably, have demanded when they took the job.
