Joe,

Unfortunately we lived in a Northern Michigan rural area where TV itself was a novelty for many of my classmates, to say nothing of electricity and in some cases, indoor plumbing (we had battery powered lights at our house until I was 5 years old).

To give you an idea of how 'innovative' our school was, remember I mentioned that Mr. Green (the teacher whom John Glenn looked like ;-) taught Physics. Well they alternated from one year to the next, between Chemistry and Physics. They did teach Biology every year but we only had one lab that had to serve all three disciplines and while the Chemistry teacher was qualified to teach Biology as well (he was also the High School Principle), he wasn't quite up to teaching Physics, but Mr. Green (the local undertaker) managed to get the school boards approval to teach it every other year. So one year, the lab was outfitted for Biology and Chemistry, and the following year, Biology and Physics. Keep in mind that the year I graduated we only had 30 students in my class (which actually was a bit small since the average was closer to 34 or 35, but pregnancies took a big toll that year ;-)

Hi Keystone,

Always good to visit with you.

I was born in 1949 but I remember being outside in 1957 at night and seeing sputnik go overhead. OCU mentioned not being able to remember much from Glenn's event in 62. I wouldn't remember it either except that I had the good fortune to be in a classroom equipped with a television which we usually used to see televised classes from our local public television station through what is now PBS. We used that T.V. to watch the Glenn launch all morning long. Our teacher had an interest, along with our principal, in us seeing the great events of the day. As I grow older I come to appreciate that education that I received in grade school during those key formative years. My grade school was a very innovative place for a small town located in rural southern Illinois at that time. I only wish that my teacher and principal were alive today for me to thank them profusely for the environment that was created to allow unfetered experimentation and the learning that resulted from that situation.

Regards,

Joe
