More likely . . .
In the case of FAR toooo many American companies . .
They saw the pension funds as a place to plunder
'excess' cash. Making the bottom line look better
by 'stealing' the employees future security.

Employers should never promice what they cannot delever. But CEOs are often like politians, the give away stuff in the future that they know will not come due until they are long gone.
