The government that the writers of the Declaration and the Constitution envisioned was one that was very limited in scope and stayed out of people's lives.
The purpose of government was to be used to help the citizens pursue their own individual happiness, not collectivist policies such as the socialists want.
BTW, Thomas Jefferson was a Republican, as was James Madison. You may want to read up on their beliefs and what they wrote. Abe Lincoln was a republican too.
