My BIL is now a pretty healthy 96, still living at home... Lost his sight, but sharp as a tack, tells tales of sorties where their buddies in other B-24's were hit, went down... But leave trips out to Capri, not so bad...
My boss, when I was working in R&D back in Michigan, was also a ball-turret gunner in the Pacific. His most important job was to watch and take notes on how much damage did their bombs do since he was the only guy on the plane who could actually see where the bombs landed.
