Clearly the Republican Party is still under the influence of Teavangelican nutjobs, which is one good reason why the potentially serious contenders simply stayed away. They didn't want to lose a primary fight to someone unelectable and waste a bunch of money and get dragged through the mud in the process. Better to wait until the Teavangelical craze blows over a little.
Heard a stat on NPR this morning (might have been yesterday) that incumbent presidents are re-elected 70-something percent of the time...say, 75%. Seeing how Obama came into office (at the bottom) and watching him do many, many things well enough surely indicates to the relatively saner ones (Jeb Bush, Christie, maybe Rubio) that waiting 4 years for a neutral race is a MUCH better strategy. I'm thinking bin Laden going to sleep with the fishies probably sealed the deal. That + Troops out of Iraq + Improving economy = Obama re-election.
It was another Romney comment that struck me. He reminded folks in Florida that Obama had said 3 years ago, 'If I don't fix the economy, I'll be a one-term president.' Then he said something like "we're here to collect on that promise!" to a big cheer from the faithful. My thought was that no, the economy IS actually improving, albeit slowly, DESPITE THE CONCERTED EFFORTS OF CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS to sabotage it in order to make Obama look bad in hopes of taking him down in November.
The earth refused to scorch under the assault of right-wing flamethrowers, and they're going to need to find a new strategy. Maybe try doing something that helps that 90% in the Middle Class for a frickin' change. Work for positive effects instead of pandering to the wealthy few. Start doing things WORTH taking CREDIT for instead of just wrecking things and blaming the other guys. Please.
