Apparently it's better to hold down wages because then the people doing the jobs will perform better. After all, if you pay too much for a job than some of the people who apply may be doing so only for the money, but if the pay is held down, then the people willing to work for that amount must really want to do that job and so we'd get better workers who are there to do a good job and not just to make money.
At least that's the argument being made by a Republican congressman in Alabama for wanting to lower the wages paid to teachers because that way the schools will know that they're getting better teachers who are more dedicated to teaching and not just because of the money.
And he justifies this argument by saying that it's consistent with 'Biblical Principles'. After all, if teaching is your 'God given ability', then apparently you should be willing to teach young people for nothing:
