For myself, I think a view that sees gold as the source of value is kinda primitive. I agree that it's shiny and this curious quality, together with its rarity, excited the minds of people long ago. But I can't see much else that should make it valuable except to folks who like to wear jewellery.
If you are looking for a valuable element, why not Plutonium? At least it does something useful. And who cares that it isn't useful for transactional purposes, as gold isn't sufficient to fulfill this role either (there isn't enough of it). In fact, over the years it was used as a currency, it was mostly a lousy one. It's fairly easy to debase a coinage.
