Yep. Couldn't agree more.
That's why the fable has hope as the evil which is left in Pandora's box.
Hope has two faces, of course. But it is kinda disgusting when an example of someone who was lucky enough to succeed is selected out to provide hope to those for whom it will most likely be an illusion.
Anyone knows that in a hypothetical situation, if 1 person in 100 who takes a risk succeeds, this isn't necessarily a great scenario for a population. It's merely a gambler's argument to suggest otherwise.
Yet in the public conversation, you invariably find the person selected to provide the example is that one person.
What use are they? They are the exception.
What one wants is the remedy where the rule is in play. How do you manage a life where you are one of the 99?
So you work hard. Yes. But don't work hard in expectation. Work hard in spite of it. If you do so, you have your best chance of success, but there's no guarantee. There's also dignity in working hard, regardless of the outcome.
Success looks after itself. But success which claims the laurel only for itself is not merely ignorant. It is arrogant.
