Richard F. Nelson, 50, had been on the force for 22 years and was assigned to the South Precinct. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the John Wayne Trail near 1800 block of SE Cedar Falls Way in North Bend about six hours after he was released from jail Thursday morning.
Nelson was arrested after an investigation that began in July after other officers told precinct supervisors that Officer Nelson's handling of drug evidence seemed suspicious.
"The concern was that drugs were not being handled appropriately," Seattle Police Chief John Diaz said.
Diaz said internal reports, combined with another report from the "streets," prompted him to launch an investigation.
"There was an individual out in the community that said there was some concern about this officer," said Diaz.
On Wednesday, in a set-up to observe the actions of Nelson, an undercover officer from another agency provided Nelson a bag full of cocaine during his shift.
According to Seattle Police Deputy Chief of Operations Nick Metz, Nelson took custody of the bag while under constant surveillance. Finding the drugs should have resulted in a "found narcotics" report, according to police, where the drugs would also be placed into
