If we are to believe the speculation, IDCC had been approached prior to the SA announcement. Let me further speculate, by stating that potential buyers and/or leaders in a consortium of buyers are familiar with IDCCs IP. The time, however, that has taken thus far is about the presentation of the entire IP portfolio (which is very big), the collective and/or individual current and future value of the IP, the future production capability of IDCC, the compatability analysis with the buyers goals, understanding of current licensing obligations, understanding of current status of litigation, etc.
All of the above is utilized by IDCC to justify its value and why it would expect billions of dollars for the company and its assets. Granted, I am sure, IDCC can justify via these presentations, $15B for the company...but this is what negotiations are for, because the buyer(s) would like to spend as little as possible.
However, I believe that IDCC feels, as time marches on, that IDCCs value increases. IDCC is an established wireless IP player with the huge portfolio of IP for the immediate future of wireless -LTE. Honestly, I believe IDCC would walk away if there were no serious bids or felt they were being played with. And then let the potential buyers try to get IDCC on the open market.
So, if we are to believe that the SA continues and a purchase of all of IDCC and its assets is the primary goal...these days of 2012 are about the final t&c's.
