Sugar rose in New York on speculation more of Brazil’s cane crop will be used to make ethanol instead of the sweetener and adverse weather may curb harvest prospects. Coffee fell.

Brazil’s government has said it may change the tax model used for ethanol to stimulate production, potentially spurring demand for cane to make the biofuel. Persistent dry weather that’s hurting the country’s corn and soybean crops might cut cane output, said Fabienne Pointier, an analyst at Lausanne, Switzerland-based researcher and broker Kingsman SA.

“Brazil wants to support ethanol, rather than sugar,” Pointier said by phone today.
