I would like that the 'marketplace at work' solved all of the issues such as this. However, from experience we know that greed and corruption are also often seen in the 'marketplace' and so there is still a need from some overall regulation and enforcement when things get out-of-hand and the average consumer is being ripped-off or taken advantage of. Even Adam Smith, the so-called father of capitalism, recognized that without ethical behavior and some level of regulations (in the form of laws) that even a 'good' thing can lead to bad result when considering the impact on a broader society. Case in point are those industries, such as mining and chemical production, where the profits are privatized while the costs, such as pollution and health consequences for employees, are often borne by the public sector. This is NOT an example of where the 'marketplace at work' was successful.

re: "even the people on the Right should support since this would be the 'marketplace at work'."

The people on the right (by this, I presume you mean 'conservatives') DO support this.

If the 'marketplace at work' principle holds and this company is on to something the marketplace likes, it will prosper. It does not need a law requiring the use of such bulbs.

On the other hand, if the bulbs and lamps are lame, the company will probably either drop them or go out of business. STILL, no law needed. You're good with this, I trust. You do, after all, sound like you're good with the 'marketplace at work.'
