Republican oppositon to Patriot Act increases, Democrat opposition decreases

Democrats oppose the Patriot Act by almost five to one compared to Republicans, yet a slight trend may be developing in GOP support of such bills. In an interesting twist following Congress' historical failure to renew the Patriot Act last week, Democrats are migrating to the bill while Republican opposition is gaining. Opposition to the bill by Republicans has nearly tripled since last year's vote.
A member of the Cato Institute who has been described as a 'millionare businessman' is among the now 27 Republicans who opposed the renewal of three provions of the Patriot Act on Monday.
Freshman Republican Congressman Richard L. Hanna joined the ranks of 26 other Republicans who opposed renewal of Patriot Act, which has been described as a tyrannical abuse of power. Hanna, who represents New York's 24th District, was one of five Republicans who had not voted on the February 8th Patriot Act roll call. In February 8th vote, 2/3rd majority was required in order to renew the bill. The bill will now go to the Senate, where it is expected to pass but will face oppositon by Senator Rand Paul.
