The main thing "real conservatives" conserve is tradition. They think this country started out on what was generally the right track, and you shouldn't mess very much with a good thing.

When changes are REALLY needed, they should be dictated and executed primarily by the states and the free market - with the Federal government being something of a last resort. The Founders wisely understood that the Federal government is the body most likely to seriously harm American freedom.

Americans used to treasure their freedom. These days, I don't think many of them give it a moment's thought. Certainly, none of the left do. They think the answer to everything is to take away another freedom.
