Reagan's 'Star Wars' initiative pumped a lot of
bucks into R&D - small, lighter, more powerful
computer chips for missile guidance systems begat
a LOT of more powerful and efficient chips for
consumer goodies.
Reagan went more on a 'war time' spending binge.
Reagan bought lots of new ships for the Navy, etc. etc.
And, historically speaking, war has always sparked
a rapid advance in technological innovation.
Civil War - Railroads and the telegraph.
WWI - Radio, airplanes.
WWII - sonar fish finders. Radar. Heavy lift aircraft.
Vietnam - the helicopter (air ambulance).
Iraq? Only a matter of time before we have
unmanned 'eye in the sky' traffic reporting.
1980's - Reagan and SDI and its need for smaller
lighter computer and computer control of guidance
mechanisms.
