6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Sandwich Islands but it has even broader implications

December 11, 2011 – ANTARCTICA – A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands just north of Antarctica. The region was also hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake on December 8. The South Sandwich Plate or microplate is a tectonic plate bounded by the subducting South American Plate to the east, the Antarctic Plate to the south and the Scotia plate to the west. The Sandwich Islands comprise what’s known as an Island arc. An island arc is a type of archipelago composed of a chain or series of volcanoes whose alignment is arc-shaped. These violent stress-release points from subducting tectonic plates are situated parallel and close to a boundary between two converging tectonic plates. Most island arcs are formed as one oceanic tectonic plate subducts another one and, in most cases, producing magma at depth below the over-riding plate. The earthquakes they produce are generally, but not always, very deep in nature. Island arcs are very high-risk regions for catastrophic seismic and volcanic episodes culminating from the dangers of intensifying Earthchanges and may be some of the planet’s first notable causalities of devastation from widespread geological change. Even before the South Sandwich Island earthquake struck, there were 4 other earthquakes reported on or near Island Arcs: a 5.8 earthquake at Ryukyu Islands, Japan, a 2.7 earthquake near Antilles in the Puerto Rico Trench, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake south of the Fiji Islands and a 4.6 magnitude earthquake near the Molucca Sea. – © The Extinction Protocol
