dws.....I believe PANL's business is licensing their tech to the display manufacturers.....and in some cases selling certain of their products to the manufacturers. Seems to be some question if it's a flat fixed fee, or per unit license.
The license with Samsung is with their mobile display division (SMD)....as far as I know....Apple does not manufacture their own displays....sourcing them from others who would need a license.

Universal Display (PANL) Slammed as Samsung Deal Seriously Questioned
October 3, 2011 10:03 AM EDT
Shares of Universal Display Corp. (Nasdaq: PANL) are under heavy pressure early Monday following a write-up at theStreetSweeper.org, which highlights the important Samsung deal in a negative light.
While analysts and other bullish followers expected a jump in the Samsung royalty rate under a renegotiated deal, the company ultimately revealed it "would no longer receive royalty payments from the giant cell phone maker at all." The new contract shows that PANL will receive a "mere “license fee” from Samsung – rather than royalties based on actual sales of products using its patented technology – and (unspecified) revenue from chemical sales to the giant electronics company going forward."
"In other words, that contract indicates, PANL may never capitalize on the popularity of Samsung smart phones featuring the Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology that has long been viewed as the key to its own future success."

Samsung, Universal Display (PANL) Enter OLED Supply Agreement
August 23, 2011 6:34 AM EDT
Samsung Mobile Display Co., Ltd. (SMD) and Universal Display Corporation (Nasdaq: PANL) announced that the companies have entered into agreements under which Universal Display will license its technologies and sell its proprietary materials to SMD for use in its line of state-of-the-art OLED display products.
The agreements announced today are an OLED Patent License Agreement and a Supplemental OLED Material Purchase Agreement. Under the license agreement, Universal Display has granted SMD license rights under various patents owned or controlled by Universal Display to manufacture and sell certain phosphorescent OLED display products. In consideration of the license grant, SMD has agreed to pay Universal Display a license fee over the term of the license agreement.
Under the supplemental agreement, SMD has agreed to purchase and Universal Display has agreed to supply a minimum amount of phosphorescent OLED material for SMD’s use in the manufacture of licensed products, subject to Universal Display being able to supply sufficient quantities to meet SMD’s requirements. The agreements run through December 31, 2017.
