For every dollar in federal taxes paid, what the state gets in return in federal spending (based on 2005 data):

California: $0.78 

Texas: $0.94 

Granted, there were a lot of 'Red States' with there fingers much deeper into the federal honeypot, such as:

Mississippi: $2.02

Alaska: $1.84

Louisiana: $1.78

West Virginia: $1.76

Alabama: $1.66

Kentucky: $1.51

Virginia: $1.51

ETC, ETC, ETC...
