re: "You can't honestly think that"

Sure I can. I live in the most densely Muslim area in the entire country. Chains of of Muslim-oriented religious stores, grocery stores, restaurants, even thrift stores are prevalent. Mosques too, of course, though I wouldn't call them "chains." But guess what? No right-wing backlash.

Now, it would be STUPID for a nationwide grocery chain to start carrying Muslim foods and products because the stores operate (say it with me) N-A-T-I-O-N-W-I-D-E.

Muslims aren't located nationwide. They've congregated in a few pockets throughout the country. I happen to be in the largest one.

You can't honestly think that if a major nationwide grocery chain actually DID set aside a Halal section that it would go unnoticed by the Rightwing media. After all, look at what happened with Butterball. I suspect that many of these same people would just a quickly make a big deal about Kosher foods on store shelves but they know that mainstream Americans wouldn't see that as acceptable speech. Perhaps in a few years popular opinion will be just as outraged over anti-Muslim rhetoric.

And while your statistics are basically correct, 1.7% of US residents are Jewish while only 0.6% are Muslim (according to figures from 2007 as reported in the CIA World Factbook), I suspect that a higher percentage of Muslims adhere to Halal restrictions than do Jews sticking to Kosher, at least on a day-to-day basis (high-holidays being the exception).
