On Thom Hartmann's radio program today he was on a rant over this item. His point was that Newt is basically saying that kids from well-off families are the only ones who should expect to participate in after school activities such as sports, drama, band, or for that matter, even do their homework. Kids from poor families are only in school to learn the minimum to qualify for low and unskilled jobs, and if that includes them working in jobs of that nature while still in school, all the better as their transition then from school to the ranks of the unskilled, minimum wage-earning, non-union labor force will just be that much easier and efficient. Kind of like when the coal mines ran their own towns for the employees and their families, complete with company stores where they could buy groceries against their pay-checks along with the rent for their house and the schools insured that the next generation of mine workers were not too over-educated.
