Eighteenth century thinking was appealing in the eighteenth century.

But we learn things as time goes by.

The notion that we are endowed by our creator with certain rights looks quaint in a post-Darwinian universe. If that kind of natural philosophy undergirds a nation's idea of itself, it is always going to see the world through a strange lens.

Let us assume a creator. It appears he/she/it has made a universe with certain rules which are hard to decipher, but that certainly do not include a right to life (who else invented death), liberty (which is achieved only as a result of civilisation) or happiness (I'm afraid it is survival all the way down).

A body politic is like a body incarnate. It needs the flexibility of joints, the strength of muscles, the durability of bone, the tensile strength of sinews, the ability to deal with infection, to mend itself, to operate continuously, to exhale, to ingest, to evacuate, to remember, to consider - and to make decisions.

I'm afraid I just cannot get interested in this set of Republicans. At some point they will be known by their proper name: the Republican'ts.

Good points!

I think there are several reasons for resistence, not only the reverence many hold for Our Founding Fathers, lack of trust, for when the 'other party' holds the power.

I also wish we had adopted a vote of confidence.

This crisis might help to highlight the way congress is hamstrung in order to promote change?

Did you hear, Newt's idea to solve income inequality, fire the janitors & use children from ages 9 to 14.
Yes, 9 years old, having one senior janitor to supervise & train.
OMG, the republicans are moving from privitizing everything to adopting child labor!

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told a crowd on Friday that the solution to income inequality is to fire school janitors, and replace them with children. I am not making this up, and it gets worse. He’s not talking about junior high or high school kids, he’s talking about “9 to 14 year-olds.”

He suggests that these nine year-olds replace “union janitors” in poor neighborhoods, and that the kids work under a single “master janitor.”
