Part of me is a Burkean conservative - I think organic growth is a solid foundation for a society. Another part of me is experimental - I think a society needs to be flexible, open-minded and willing to tolerate mistakes. I suspect I'm like many people.
But those Republicans aren't traditional conservative at all. They are true believers and dogmatists with a set of virtues written in stone which are not defensible when you let yourself think about them. But rather than test their theories against reality, most right wingers prefer to hide under the skirts of Ayn Rand, or whatever. Theory is so much more comfortable than testing it against reality.
Romney is not going to win the nomination, in my view. It is clear that 75-80% are consistently opposed to him. However the others fail, the Republican electorate is not turning to him. You can't win with 25%. So whoever ends up being Not-Romney will go up against Obama. None of them is going to win that challenge.
Frank is quite the wit. But Gingrich is just too easy to pick apart.
