ribit,

I agree with your points.
We can't compete with nearly slave labor, where they have zero regulations, no matter how hard we try.
We don't want to lower our standards.

We are in flux, sort of like when the stage coach became obsolete because trains could do the work.
Horses lost their demand.
Computers & technology have made work so efficent that fewer & fewer workers are needed....

...in all seriousness for a moment here, let me tell ya what's wrong with the American economy.

First we have "outsourced" way too many jobs. The manufacturing sector is all overseas someplace where they don't have to pay somebody a hundred bucks an hour in salary and benefits to get em to do anything. It is "profitable" for businesses to ship the jobs elsewhere. The "customer base" for America is for the most part either unemployed or underemployed and the demand for goods and services has decreased along with the customer base.

What can the govt do to reverse this? There is only one thing that I know of. They can make it unprofitable to ship jobs out of the country. Ya can do that either by reducing costs here or by making it more expensive to do em somewhere else. There is no democrat and no republican out there who wants to anger the global one worlders and world bankers, obamba included.

It is screwed up beyone repair I suspect and will have to hit the absolute bottom before it gains any movement in an upwards direction. By that I mean that we are headed for a depression worse than the last one.
