The Dem's passage of civil rights and pro choice (Rowe vs. Wade) created the perfect storm for the GOP to court the racist south (the 100 yr Dem "solid south") and the religious right. It's been the GOP solid south ever since. That's the simplistic reason we are where we are today. IMO, the religious right (read WASP) in particular was duped. It's just not Christian to hate, or support hatred. It's not Christian to submit to avarice. No, it's just the opposite, a "true" Christian is an advocate for those less fortunate. Christians are supposed to "do the right thing."
Hopefully time, education, migration, and immigration will end the GOP racist stronghold on the south. Somehow the religious right must be convinced they were had and are political pawns for the rich. Obviously they are relatively unsusceptible to change once convicted. So, w/o introduction of some new significant catalyst, similar to abortion rights or civil rights, I think we'll be stuck w/ our current political situation for quite some time.
