My thoughts:

Who owns the mortgage? Fanny Mae? Freddy Mac? How much did they pay for it? Face value? Less? If Fanny or Freddy have the mortgage, then any loss will be at taxpayers expense, I assume.

He had two years of free housing.

Wow. But I guess the banks have received so much from the Fed that they can afford to eat these debts.

Your friend didn't mention it, but he also presumably received a year or more of free housing. Quite a deal.
