I think he's going to win re-election myself. When he begins to put his billion dollars to work, the sense will change. He's already working on establishing distinctions between himself and the Republicans. He's going to clarify these distinctions very starkly as the campaign gets going.
He hasn't been as impressive a president as I expected. Part of that is because he had a most unaccommodating opposition. Part of that is because he is more structurally conservative than I imagined a liberal-leaning constitutional lawyer might be. Part of that is because he is always trying to achieve consensus and sometimes consensus isn't where the best answers emerge from. But he is still an awful lot more appealing than the alternatives.
