Subprime mortgages weren't the problem. Fraudulent subprime mortgages and the packaging of those mortgages were the problem.

If fannie and freddie had not been buying subprime
mortgages to beat the band . . . could the thieving
'businessmen' have sold the 'mortgages' and created the 'mortgage backed securities' based upon those
never-should-have-been-issued mortgages?
