Recall attempt of Walker to begin Nov. 15

The Wisconsin Democratic Party will take the first steps towards attempting to recall first-term Republican Gov. Scott Walker on Nov. 15, its chairman announced Monday night.

In an email to supporters, state party chairman Mike Tate said he would appear on Ed Shultz's MSNBC program at 10 p.m. ET to formally announce the historic effort that would place Walker on the ballot just two years after his election.

"In fewer than 37 days, we will need to organize, train and fund an army of grassroots volunteers who will need to collect more than 540,206 valid recall signatures," Tate wrote to supporters, asking for a donation of $11.15.

The goal is to raise $540,206 for the petition effort by November 15.

The move comes two months after Democrats picked up two state senate seats, falling a single seat short of overturning control of the state's upper chamber.

Tate said the party would be working in conjunction with the progressive group United Wisconsin to collect the more than half a million signatures needed to force Walker to face the voters in 2012.

Once an organization files its intent to recall the governor, it has 60 days to collect the necessary signatures, according to state statute.

Polls have shown the Badger State is sharply divided on the prospect of recalling the controversial governor.
