re: A .45 for the bedroom, A shotgun over the door,
A 30.06 for distance, You don't need any more.
I think you will disagree with this one DE LOL"

Right you are. I think the most practical guns long-term may be my .22 rifles. After all, I've gone out during hunting season and seen how quickly the deer become scarce. But vermin? They're ALWAYS around. There won't soon be a shortage of rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, possums and the like. But shoot them with a 30-06 and you aren't going to have much left to eat!

I once heard of a guy who shot a rabbit with a 30-06. When he went to pick it up, he was able to find the head. That was about it!

I'll keep my numerous .22s. When shooting small critters at a distance, they're the way to go. Cheap ammunition, a reasonable slug for anything under five pounds, and not terribly inaccurate. I'm also a big believe in EXCESS guns - something North failed to mention. They're needed both for redundancy and for barter. I can't think of anything that there'd be a bigger long-term demand for - except, perhaps, for ammunition.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Nemo,

I woke at 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. I watched an old movie on TCM, took a look at the internet and found your piece. I'm glad you posted it.

The most valuable excerpt? "This clearly cannot go on indefinitely. The federal government is absorbing too much of America's capital. Its deficits show no sign of ending."

I didn't have to read far before I knew I was looking at something by Gary North. Quality always shows! Style too. But North is also one of the few financial pundits who routinely references God in his articles.

This time, North focused on God, Gold, Groceries and Guns. I just posted a longer list that includes fuel, equipment, tools, fertilizer, animals and farmable land - and I like my list more than his. There's a relationship between groceries and farmable land, but while groceries run out, land generally does not. There's a lot to be said for a REPLENISHABLE source of groceries.

And now that I'm thinking of it, there's one more VERY important item that both North and I forgot: COMMUNITY. It's vital that people today cultivate strong relationships. I don't think this can be accomplished in an urban environment. There are just too many people... too many strangers... too much distrust. How can you and your neighbors look out for one another and guard each others' backs if you don't really know one another?

Strong community ties might not be possible in the suburbs either. Sure, you can know and like your immediate neighbors, but if someone you don't know walks or drives past, are you going to think much of it?

This is one of the reasons I sought to retire to a small town - and now to an isolated part of an even smaller town. People who live there will know me quickly. I'll get to know them. HOPEFULLY a bond will form. We don't live in the old west anymore, and not many of us are frontiersmen with the skills needed to go it alone. I'm certainly not.

I think North may have substituted God for Community. But religious rhetoric aside, until Death is staring one in the face, strong community connections are more practical. It's ironic, then, that in so much of the United States, church continues to play a vital role in community acceptance. In community REJECTION, too!
