Mitt Romney leads New Hampshire poll

By JUANA SUMMERS | 10/7/11 6:00 PM EDT

Mitt Romney holds a big lead and Herman Cain continues to surge, according to a survey of New Hampshire voters released Friday afternoon.

The latest WMUR Granite State poll shows Romney solidly in first place with 37 percent support, followed by Cain, who is in second place with 12 percent, and Ron Paul, who captured 9 percent. Jon Huntsman is in fourth place with 8 percent.

The New Hampshire survey is the latest to report an uptick in support for Cain after his upset victory at Florida’s Presidency 5 straw poll — and a decline in the fortunes of Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann.

Perry and Newt Gingrich each took 4 percent of the vote. Bachmann and Rick Santorum took 2 percent each.

Long shots Gary Johnson and Buddy Roemer each had less than 1 percent.

Huntsman, who has staked his hopes in New Hampshire, and Cain made the biggest gains in the poll. Both Huntsman and Cain had just 2 percent in WMUR’s July survey.

Bachmann saw the biggest dip in her numbers, with her support dropping 10 points since July, from 12 percent to 2 percent.

The poll revealed that the GOP race for the first-in-the-nation primary state remains fluid. Just as in previous surveys, there is still a huge bloc of undecided voters.

Only 11 percent of those surveyed have definitely decided who they will vote for. Sixty-eight percent say they are still undecided.

The survey of 345 likely GOP voters was conducted Sept. 26-Oct. 6 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.3 percentage points.
