FWIT, and it ain't much CF, that word has metamorphosed over the years, especially the past 20 or so. Today any animus depends on the user and contexts. Often its used positively or jocularly in comradery. Historically ugly for sure, but times change. That being said, I have a "wing nut" friend that still alludes to our President as that "....." socialist.
I'm probably the least sensitive person on this thread, but I have no issue here with your use of the word you dislike hearing.
Personally, I don't think hiding the word changes the history it represents. It isn't a word to use at someone. But to treat it as unmentionable gives it a power which I find uncomfortable.
