Decomp,

I did a quick search & found this. I don't know if this is the same contest she was in, but it explains their goal to help the homeless children.

I don't remember the 'assault' on Bush Sr wrt the homeless.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh Department of Education – through its essay and poster contest held yearly during the November National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week – encourages its middle school children to learn about homelessness through classroom discussion and research and to write an essay or create a poster expressing their new understanding of homelessness in Allegheny County.

The theme for the November 2011 contest will be How might you provide children who are homeless with "a little help, a little hope, and somebody who believes in them." How might you encourage others to do so as well. (The statement is by legendary basketball player, Earvin "Magic" Johnson.) Fifth through eighth grade student participants in the contest will each contribute a $1 entry fee, and many of the Diocese's schools will hold additional fund raisers in support of HCEF. On November 15th, the winning writers and artists will be recognized at a luncheon at St Mary’s of Mercy Parish in downtown Pittsburgh following a morning of community service at the church's Red Door food distribution center. The Diocese awards $250 Tuition Assistance Grants to the contest winners. You can still read the essays and view the posters of last year's participants here.

Congratulations, clo! And, impossible! A granddaughter you say??? You'd have to have been a bride at 13.

I'm sure your granddaughter is very talented. Are you going to post a picture of her submission? (If you do, be sure to photoshop her name away first.)

Out of curiosity, who sponsored the contest? I haven't heard much about the homeless since 'the plight of the homeless' became such a political sensation back in the '80s - used in the assault on Bush the 1st, though it completely disappeared after the election.

Not that I'd expect your granddaughter to remember THAT. She couldn't have even been alive at the time.
