U.S.-Born al Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki Is Killed in Yemen
SANA, Yemen — Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born preacher depicted as a leading
figure in Al Qaeda’s outpost in Yemen, was killed on Friday morning in the north
of the country, according to the Defense Ministry.
Earlier this year, the American military renewed its campaign of airstrikes in
Yemen, using drone aircraft and fighter jets to attack Qaeda militants. One of
the attacks was aimed at Mr. Awlaki, one of the most prominent members of the
Qaeda affiliate group. There was no immediate comment from American officials.
But Mr. Awlaki’s death, if confirmed, seemed likely to be welcomed in the United
States, where Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said in July that two of his top
goals were to remove Ayman al-Zawahri, Al Qaeda’s new leader after the death of
Osama Bin Laden, and Mr. Awlaki.
