For the record, of my immediate family the only person who has ever spent any time in jail was our youngest son who 10 years ago left the scene of a non-injury accident and when he failed to appear in court a warrant was issued and he was eventually arrested and spent a total of ONE NIGHT in jail. In the end he was required to pay a fine and do some community service for his offense. That has been it, PERIOD.

Except of course for the time I spent at our county's honor farm/prison, but that was as part of a Bible outreach and reconciliation program where a group of men from our church would spend a day with a group of male prisoners who were about to be released and we provided them some spiritual consoling, fellowship and reflections on Bible verses and commentary. I've participated in 3 of these 'days of reflection' and my wife has done 2 when her women's group met with female prisoners under similar circumstances. So yea, perhaps I do have a more personal relationship with our justice system then perhaps you've ever had, just not in the way that you would like to think.

Nice essay! Alas, it's a bit off point. I've noted only that you routinely make a big deal out of an injustice that rarely happens, and act oblivious to a far greater one caused, in part, by society's overreaction to the first one. It's kind of weird.

Sorry to hear about your family member. That was only a guess, honest. Is it your son? I know you often mention the one who's a master chef but never talk about son #2.

I've got a friend with a jailed child. It's ripping him in two, but I think he agrees with me about the death penalty. The man's a rock.
