Cuomo hits highest rating in office at 66 percent

It's another poll vault for Gov. Cuomo.

A Quinnipiac University poll being released today shows the governor jumping to his highest approval ratings since taking office, 66 percent positive versus 17 percent negative.

That's a nine-point net increase from the previous Q poll in August, when Cuomo was perched at 62-22 percent.

Pollster Maurice Carroll attributed the stronger numbers to Cuomo's reliable performance during Hurricane Irene, which also boosted Mayor Bloomberg's poll results earlier.

Cuomo's continuing popularity stood in stark contrast to President Obama's, who came in at 50-45 percent in a state he won by 62-37 percent in 2008.

Cuomo fared best in the suburbs, where he got a 74-7 percent grade. New York City provided his worst -- but still very respectable -- margin of 62-21 percent. Upstaters gave him a 64-19 percent approval mark.

The governor faces a possible in next year's battle over redistricting.

By an overwhelming 70-17 percent margin, voters said Cuomo needs to "speak out more forcefully" for an independent commission to draw new voting lines instead of allowing the state legislature to handle the job.

The poll of 1,016 registered voters was conducted Sept. 13-18.
