re: "...there's no need for an audit trail unless a democrat loses."
The kicker, as far as outrageousness goes, is that purely electronic voting is an abomination, even if I was mistaken.
Under the old system, paper ballots go from the voter's hand into a lock box, where they are thereafter presumably kept under watch. (Yes, I know, we hear every election about precincts that didn't get counted. But at least confidence in the system CAN be applied if the system's procedures are followed.)
There are no known procedures around the securing and proper tabulation of electronic votes. There are any number of subtle ways that "bugs" can be introduced to swing elections in one direction or the other. Unlike paper ballots which can be confirmed after the fact to have been cast in a certain way, electronic votes are wholly at the mercy of people who should not be trusted: Corporate programmers and engineers whose motives are unknown.
Maybe I was wrong about the behavior of the electronic voting system. Maybe I made it all up, or just forgot. The problem is no one can find out! If it DID function as I say, no one can confirm that.
And that's a huge problem.
If this latest trend in our democracy does not scare the bejeesus out of you folks, then you just don't understand it.
And maybe that's problem. Americans today tend to TRUST what they don't UNDERSTAND.
