Reno police say 9 people killed in Reno air crash

By SCOTT SONNER

4:06 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2011

RENO, Nev. — Reno police say a total of nine people have died in a crash of a World War II-era plane at an air race.

The deaths include seven who were killed on the tarmac, including the pilot, and two others who died at hospitals.

The new death toll was announced at a briefing with local and federal investigators.

Investigators say they are examining the site, gathering information and are encouraged by the large number of photos and videos available to them.

They have not speculated on a cause but organizers pointed to a possible mechanical failure.

RENO, Nev. -- An airplane has crashed near the grandstand at the National Championship Air Races near Reno, Nev.

It wasn't immediately known if there were deaths or injuries. KRNV-TV aired videotape of the scene that showed at least four people being carried on stretchers to ambulances.

It wasn't clear what kind of airplane was involved.

Jeff Martinez, a KRNV weatherman, was just outside the air race grounds at the time of the crash. He says he saw a plane veer to the right and then "it just augered straight into the ground."

He says he saw "pieces and parts going everywhere."

The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race.
