While trailing about billows of sawdust, I have been looking for a good summary of what I was alluding to. Here is an article which does a good job with the topic. I would add to these ideas the thesis that the government made huge amounts of natural resources available at extremely cheap prices, especially after the civil war with the exploitation of the west. The creation of the railroads cannot be over emphasized, and it was made possible by huge government giveaways of land.
