A new political advertisement will be popping up on Iowa TV and computer screens, this one with middle-of-the-pack Ron Paul trying to douse some of frontrunner Rick Perry’s heat.

One message in Paul’s attack ad is clear: One Texan has had unwavering conservative principles, while the other Texan once pushed “liberal values.”

Another theme: Ronald Reagan’s “revolution” was successful against the odds and the Reaganesque Paul can win, too.

The 60-second ad, called “Trust,” starts out with a narrator saying: “The establishment called him extreme and unelectable.”

The narrator is not talking about Paul, but Reagan. The same black-and-white photo of Paul and Reagan that appeared in mailers in Iowa before the straw poll appears on screen.

The ad points out the fact that Perry helped lead Democrat Al Gore’s campaign for president in 1988.

In contrast, Paul endorsed Reagan (himself a former liberal Democrat) for president in the 1976 election against incumbent Gerald Ford – one of only four congressman to do so.

“After Reagan, Sen. Al Gore ran for president, pledging to raise taxes and increase spending, pushing his his liberal values,” the narrator says. “And Al Gore found a cheerleader in Texas: Rick Perry.”

The kicker at the end: “Now America must decide who to trust, Al Gore’s Texas cheerleader? Or the one who stood with Reagan?”

Paul’s first TV ad in Iowa, which aired 53 days ago, also did flashbacks, with photos of political leaders in ‘80s and ‘90s and a message about failed debt ceiling compromises.

A new Rasmussen survey of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa shows Perry, the governor of Texas, with a substantial lead at 29 percent. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is at 18 percent, nearly tied with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 17 percent.

Paul is at 14 percent, with no other candidate with more than 4 percent.

Jesse Benton, Paul’s campaign chairman, said in a statement this morning: “Congressman Paul has an unparalleled record of championing true conservative principles. Dr. Paul’s ideas of limited Constitutional government, sound money and balanced budgets have won the day.

Other candidates are trying to parrot Dr. Paul’s principles, but their records prove they cannot be trusted to live up to their rhetoric. Dr. Paul is the only candidate with the credibility and integrity to restore America now.”

Benton said the ad will appear on television “with substantial air-time buys in New Hampshire and Iowa,” as well as in banner ads on the Internet. It will also be emailed to conservative and tea party groups.
