If I have things correctly, the Republican economic argument is now entirely perverse.
The Republicans spend government money lavishly when the economy is strong (they call this supply side economics) and encourage austerity measures when the economy is weak. The former helps create bubbles, which have a habit of bursting. The latter helps mire us within liquidity traps once the bubble bursts.
Macroeconomics requires the exact opposite course for the government: save in times of plenty, spend in times of misery.
It's quite weird that anyone would think anything else makes sense. But here we are, and a bunch of Republican rubes (apologies to csl) who presumably believe what they are saying are seeking election to the presidency.
