I'm surprised a Libertarian type didn't mention the inflation (see Arab Oil Embargo) that occurred during the Nixon years, and the extraordinary actions (20% Fed Funds Rate) the Fed had to take during the Carter Years that also crippled the U.S economy for the first two years of the Reagan administration.
