RMV at the wheel: Time to cry uncle, Onyango

You want to solve Massachusetts’ illegal immigration problem? Easy: Hand it over to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Because if Rachel Kaprielian and her government goons were in charge of enforcing these paperwork issues, Uncle Omar would have been rounded up long ago. Believe me, I know.

Two years ago, the Framingham police arrested me on orders from the RMV because I was driving with a revoked license. The fact that it was due entirely to a government paperwork error was irrelevant. The fact that the RMV’s policy at the time (and still is, as far as I know) was to revoke licenses without notifying drivers also made no difference.

I sat in the same Framingham jail that Obama Onyango should have been locked up in long ago.

Thousands of Massachusetts drivers have had the same experience: Some minor paperwork glitch or lost ticket for a long-forgotten infraction, and . . . BAM! There’s a soccer mom stuck on the side of the road with crying kids while the RMV tows away the family van. No excuses. No “what about the children?” angst. When your paperwork isn’t in order, you pay the price.

Period.

Now consider the case of Uncle Omar. As an illegal immigrant with a deportation order against him he somehow had a valid Massachusetts drivers license (a crime); a current and valid Social Security number (bigger crime); and was using these documents to submit tax documents to the Internal Revenue Service and the state Department of Revenue.

When an illegal immigrant is ordered deported, what happens to his Social Security number? Don’t ask. Well you can, but the Obama administration refuses to answer the question.

But we already know the answer. What happens is nothing. An American citizen forgets to update his car registration and he can get dragged into court. A criminal immigrant ignores a deportation order and spends 10 years sending the IRS his accurate mailing address and . . . nothing.

Outrages like the Obama case aren’t exceptions or oddities or even political favoritism. Gov. Deval Patrick said earlier this week that “illegal is illegal,” and President Barack Obama has repeatedly urged enforcement of immigration laws. If they’re serious, here are three simple, non-controversial steps politicians could take tomorrow:

First, the Social Security Administration could connect the numbers they give immigrants to their visa status. Once an immigrant’s status becomes illegal, give him 90 days and then revoke the Social Security number.

Second, when an immigrant gets a deportation order, simply cancel his Social Security number.

Finally, follow up on the millions of “no-match” letters the Social Security Administration has sent out to employers since 2004. When businesses know they’ll be fined starting 90 days after the letter arrives if the issue hasn’t been resolved, illegal workers will get replaced by (currently unemployed) legal residents. And the fines will more than cover the cost of enforcement.

More jobs for Americans, more revenue for the government and more justice for all. Simply by treating illegal immigrants the same way we Massachusetts drivers are treated.

So why won’t the president implement any of these policies? Because they would work.

Nicholas Guaman, charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Matthew Denice, and Onyango are part of our national immigration kabuki dance. Politicians pretend to enforce the law and illegal immigrants pretend to be afraid.

But until the next Obama Onyango is more worried about his paperwork status than a Massachusetts driver without an inspection sticker, the system will remain a joke.
